Robo Systems 2×2 Ultra Bike

The two-wheel-drive, balloon-tired motorcycle is a very task-specific beast, designed to conquer rugged, inaccessible terrain at low speeds and as efficiently as possible. The first 2X2 all-terrain motorcycle was created in 1958 by what is now Rokon, and they still produce several models in their New Hampshire facilities. Recently, a company called Robo Systems has begun fundraising for their electric take on the theme, called the 2X2 Ultra Bike, billed as “the best off-road adventure e-bike”.

Based out of Russia, Robo Systems already produces an off-road capable wheelchair, so electric mobility comes naturally. The 2X2 Ultra Bike formula begins with two 1000W hub motors, one in each wheel, eliminating the need for any complicated and heavy drive system to the front wheel. A centrally mounted battery pack provides 1.6kWh or 2.6kWh, depending on configuration, for up to 50km of range.

However, Robo Systems’ Indiegogo campaign claims “unlimited range”, presumably because the bike comes equipped with an on-board generator and wheels that can carry 20 L of petrol each in sealed tanks to power the generator. While this would extend the range of the bike considerably, most would not consider it “unlimited.”

An onboard charger, connected to the generator or an outside 110/220V power source, can recharge the batteries in one hour. An inverter allows the generator or the battery pack to power 110/220V tools or accessories when needed.

The designers claim that the Ultra Bike has positive buoyancy, but for traversing deep water, a pontoon system is available to keep the top-heavy bike upright.

The basic bike lists for $2,600 USD, with the bike and all accessories listing for $4,200 USD. However, early adopters can get the basic bike for $1,790 USD on Indiegogo, with the fully-equipped version going for $2950 USD. Shipping is slated for August, 2022. Obviously, with armed conflict still ongoing in Ukraine, there is a very high chance you’ll have a hard time actually getting your bike from Russia anytime soon, so buyer beware…
