Oh, Good: Now Barcelona Is Getting Those Noise Cameras

California’s doing it. The UK’s doing it. The French have tried it out, and so have the Canadians. And now, the city of Barcelona is signed up to try out new “noise cameras” in an effort to crack down on too-loud vehicles.

Translation: They’re automating the fight against loud pipes. They’re careful not to single out motorcycles, as that raises a ruckus in the courtroom, eventually, but these programs inevitably start when open-piped bikes blat-blat their way around urban settings and infuriate the locals. Those locals then complain to police, who don’t have the manpower (and often not the will) to do anything about it. The solution is an automated camera system, which detects too-loud bikes and mails out tickets.

In Barcelona, Moto.it reports authorities are looking at a three-month pilot project to assess the cameras’ capabilities. From there, presumably, the Spanish city’s governance will decide whether or not this tech is a good long-term fit.

So far, we have not seen the potential fines to be handed out. As Moto.it points out, around the world, depending which jurisdiction you live in, authorities have a wide range of financial slap-downs for the tickets handed out by these cameras. Sometimes, when used in pilot programs, there are no fines handed out at all—authorities just want to watch and see how many offenders are caught, before investing in the system. Indeed, some jurisdictions have rejected the camera tech, after initial trials with early models revealed inefficiencies or other issues in the systems.
