In addition, BMW riders like Helmut Dähn and Hans Otto Butenuth celebrated fifth place in the Isle of Man Production TT class. But they had actually set the fastest time on their BMW R 90 S. However, due to handicapping rules of the time, they were listed in fifth place behind two 250cc and two 500cc motorcycles. Nevertheless, since BMW recorded the fastest time, their fifth place finish was celebrated as a victory. Continuing to compete in world-class racing, 74 years after “Schorsch” Meier’s success in the Senior TT, Michael Dunlop rode a BMW S 1000 RR to victory in the 2014 Isle of Man TT Superbike race. In the following years, the BMW “RR” would go on to win more TT victories. BMW competition motorcycles also competed off-road. In the Paris-Dakar rallies of the early 1980s, BMW dominated the standings with riders like Hubert Auriol and Gaston Rahier. BMW says that the aforementioned wins show that the BMW motorcycling brand holds a worthy space in the world of motorcycle racing.
