advrider
Alpinestars, the well-known motorcycle safety gear manufacturer, is recalling some of its GP Plus gloves. The recall results from a potential cancer risk associated with chromium VI. Manufacturers sometimes use chromium in the tanning of certain leathers. The usual is chromium III. However, it appears that the these gloves have somehow been processed with chromium VI. Chromium VI is far more reactive than chromium III and is known to be a dermatological irritant. In addition, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have deemed it to be a carcinogen when inhaled and is classified as being mutagenic (i.e., it can damage DNA) and toxic to reproduction. The affected gloves are as follows: Safety Gate Alert # A12/00772/22 Brand: Alpinestars Model name: GP Plus Model number: 3556513-12 Year of manufacture: 2016 Batch number: OA86990 Barcode: 8051194159854 You can determine whether your gloves are part of this recall by checking the small tag underneath a larger tag inside the glove’s cuff. Affected gloves will have a small tag that reads “OA 86990”. As a result of the recall, effective May 15, 2022, all affected gloves are being removed from the marketplace. In addition, any further marketing of the gloves will stop. Unfortunately, as of the writing of this article, there’s no about any other Alpinestars GP Plus gloves sold in other parts of the world.
