advrider
The KTM 450 SMR is a dedicated supermoto race bike, a lightweight scalpel based on dirt bike bones, designed to loft the front, slide the rear, or do both at the same time. The 2023 version features numerous updates aimed at improving an already excellent machine, with no stone left unturned. The heart of the machine is a new engine, a SOHC single rated at 63 horsepower and weighing in at 26.8 kg (59 lbs). A more compact cylinder head, lightweight valves (40mm intake, 33mm exhaust), and redesigned intake ports increase efficiency and power. A new crankshaft and counterbalancer reduce vibrations, while updated cases and engine covers reduce weight and centralize mass. A hydraulically actuated Suter slipper clutch reduces wheel hop while backing it in, working with a redesigned transmission aimed at durability and lighter shift action. The engine is tilted 2 degrees rearward to lower the countershaft sprocket in the all-new frame, which, like the new subframe, is tuned for optimal flex and rigidity characteristics. The chromoly steel frame and polyamide reinforced aluminum subframe work alongside a hollow die-cast aluminum swingarm that provides a wide range of axle adjustment to change the wheelbase for various track configurations. A shorter rear shock reduces weight, and features new tool-less damping adjustability. The 16.5″ front wheel and 17″ rear are spoked Alpina units, shod with Metzeler Racetec SM K1 Supermoto race tires, 125/75 R16.5 front and 165/630 R17 rear. The 450 SMR features two engine maps, a quickshifter working from 2nd to 5th gear, traction control, and launch control, all controllable from a handlebar switch. This is all to say the bike has been improved all around (just like KTM likes to do with its dirt bike line, with fine-tuning on every system), aimed at fine tuning an already impossibly sharp scalpel. The bike can be seen in KTM’s YouTube video circling a hybrid track, which is how a supermoto ought to be ridden. For more information, visit https://www.ktm.com/ or your local KTM dealer.
