Insta360 has just announced a new camera which is supposed to offer the best-ever video capability in a 360 camera. The new Insta360 ONE RS 1-Inch 360 Edition (wotta mouthful!) is now on the market, packing absolutely massive filmographic firepower—far more than almost any rider will ever need.

As the name implies, this 360 camera features a 1-inch sensor—actually, it features two such sensors, co-designed with Leica, They’re capable of capturing [email protected] footage in a 360-degree field, or 21MP still photos. Just as importantly, the large sensor size also means the camera’s low-light performance is improved. Insta360 claims improved indoor performance; that’s unlikely to impress motorcyclists, but for riders who’ve wanted better video of their dawn or dusk rides, the low-light improvement will be good news.

Insta360 has announced initial pricing of $799.99 US for the entire camera; if you already have the previously-announced One RS camera that it’s based on, you can upgrade as an accessory lens and other bits for $649.99. That’s a lot of money, and no doubt most riders will be happy to stick with the lesser-spec’d standard ONE RS model (see our write-up here). Even that camera has so much capability that most riders will only scratch the surface, especially if you’re just making videos for Instagram reels.

However—if for some reason you want or need the horsepower of the Insta360 ONE RS 1-Inch 360 Edition, you can order the whole camera or the upgrade kit from Insta360’s website. As the company’s marketeers say, “Its dual-lens 360 design enables creators to easily capture creative shots that would be impossible with traditional shooting rigs,” and if you’ve fooled around with one long enough (ADV staffers have tried out a couple of them; see here, here), you’ll know it does have capabilities you just can’t get with a standard “flat” filming GoPro or similar cam. Panning shots are doable with just a click-and-drag, instead of a separate cameraman; the 360 camera can function as a third-person viewpoint for inflight footage, if you set it up carefully, and it does it better in some ways than a drone ever can.

The downside is, along with the added expense, you’ll also have to master a more complicated video footage app. And, with any video camera, you’ll have to also have a muscled-up computer if you plan to do serious editing with 4k footage, let alone the 6k footage the new Insta360 1-inch camera is capable of. In other words: The $800 camera might only be the first expense, once you factor in possible computer upgrades, not to mention the learning curve necessary for the camera’s proprietary editing app.
