advrider
BMW Motorrad (BMW) is announcing its Bluetooth and Mesh capable communicator. They call it the ConnectedRide Com U1 (U1) communicator. At first blush, the system appears to be equipped like many other good-quality communicators currently on the market. BMW says the U1 has a universally compatible design. In addition, they say the new U1 features: “…a modern, universally compatible design and can be attached to such helmets as the BMW Motorrad StreetX, GS Pure and Sao Paolo. Impressive audio performance, a high-quality sound and excellent wear comfort are delivered by the HD-quality speakers, which are very easy to fit in the helmet.” The U1 also comes with an FM radio that will save up to 10 stations. It also has a channel search feature using a button on the comm. The operation and control of the U1 are handled by four buttons on the com or BMW’s free U1 app. You can also access other U1 functions using voice control depending on the communicator’s operating mode. If English isn’t your first language, the U1 can also be controlled in eight different languages (English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian). Battery life Of course, battery life and communicator range are important issues for motorcycle communicators. BMW says that the U1 has a battery life of 13 hours in Bluetooth Intercom mode and up to 8 hours when using the Mesh Intercom. As for charging, BMW claims that you can quick charge the U1 for 3.5 hours of Mesh Intercom use or 6 hours of Bluetooth intercom use with a 20-minute charge. Furthermore, the U1’s range can be optimized with a small, flip-up antenna at the top of the communicator. Compatibility The U1 also has a Universal Intercom function that can “…establish a call connection to a person using a headset made by another manufacturer.” However, when using this function, there may be some reduction in the unit’s operating range. As for connecting to other manufacturer’s motorcycle communicators, BMW says: Communication via Mesh with communication systems made by manufacturers other than Sena or BMW Motorrad is not possible. Neither is it possible to integrate external communication systems in group communication via a Bluetooth bridge. Unfortunately, BMW did not provide the U1’s MSRP. However, we have contacted them and will update this article once we receive a response.
