advrider
We suppose if you have enough money, it’s not a distant dream to buy two of something you like—one to use and one to… collect. We’re not sure how this 1977 Can Am 250 MX ended up as a 45-year-old virgin, but if it still had a box it would definitely be NIB. Maybe it has a sibling out in the barn that needs rings, tires and a rattle can repaint. However this Can-Am 250 managed to dodge the dirt and live a life of silent admiration, it’s up for auction over at Mecum and will go under the hammer sometime between July 6th and 8th in Florida. The bike’s comfortable life may be a result of its rarity, as Mecum says it was only imported for one year and “it remains one of the most sought-after collector models.” It also had the nickname “Black Widow” due to its black-and-orange paint scheme, which is all original and apparently fairly flawless. It still has the original tires as well. Photo courtesy of Mecum Auctions Back in the day, Mecum says the 244cc oil injected two-stroke screamer was good for 35 ponies. Power flows through a five-speed gearbox to a back tire suspended by a pair of long and lean rear shocks. Skinny Marzocchi fork tubes likely allow a bit of flex on those hard turns in the sand or mud. At least the seat looks more comfortable than 90 percent of what’s found on modern MXers. A proper title, manual and storage rack are included. Would you peel the protective plastic off the vintage tires and fire up the Black Widow for a dirt track romp, or just park it in the living room and polish it with a diaper on Sundays? And let us know what you think it’s going to sell for. BTW, Can-Ams are not exactly mainstream bikes, but ADVrider’s inmates do have a history of restoring them, and if you venture down to Old’s Cool or Thumpers, you’ll find some talk about bikes from this mostly-forgotten brand. For a look of what happens if you want to restore a Can-Am that doesn’t have zero miles on it, check out inmate @rick danger’s restoration of a 1975 Can-Am 250 MX here.
