Heads Up! The Trans Lab Is Almost 100 Percent Paved!

Earlier this year, we told you the legendary Trans Labrador Highway was almost 100 percent paved. Now, according to a Facebook post by a government worker, it seems the job is only hours away from finishing.

Here’s what Labrador-based MLA Perry Trimper posted to Facebook this week:

JUST A FEW HOURS TO GO AND THIS PHASE OF THE TRANS-LABRADOR HIGHWAY WILL BE PAVED!
Congratulations to everyone involved in this milestone project – that has taken years of effort and commitment from the Provincial and Federal Governments along with leadership from across Labrador.
Once stations with washrooms, communications and other emergency support are in place – Route 510 will be complete. The next Phase of the TLH will be to connect the North Coast. I hope to see the Tender for the Pre-feasibility study announced soon.
Wishing everyone a smooth and safe drive!

No surprise that the job’s done—it was about 90 percent paved back when I rode it in 2019, and I specifically went that year to see it before the job was done.

At that point, the secondary roads in Labrador were still mostly unpaved, but judging from that Facebook post, it sounds like the provincial government is now keen on roadbuilding off the main highway and into the smaller communities. Good for them (probably), bad for adventure riders. Still, given the sheer size of The Big Land, it will take years before this job is anywhere near done, and when it is completed, that will just make it easier for riders to push beyond those small towns (although it’ll likely be hard enduro-style riding, by the time you get that far into the bush, and the bugs will eat you alive).

Also, remember that Quebec’s Route 389, at the southern end of the Trans Labrador Highway, will almost certainly remain mostly unpaved for a long, long time, and frankly, that road is a better ride than the Trans Lab anyway.
