Honda Motor Co. (Honda) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Honda GL1800 Gold Wing motorcycles for potentially improper ignition timing program. Honda says the program could retard the bike’s ignition, decreasing power output or potentially causing a stall.

Honda’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report to NHTSA

Honda’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says 1,740 motorcycles may be affected.

In the report, Big Red says:

“Due to an improper ignition timing program, the engine control unit (ECU) of manual transmission equipped vehicles may retard the timing if the clutch lever is pulled within a specific range, with the transmission in 2nd gear or higher and a closed throttle, causing a decrease in engine output.”

Describing the safety risk, Honda says:

“A vehicle with an improper ignition timing program may retard the timing while driving, causing a decrease in engine output, potentially stalling the engine, and increasing the risk of a crash or injury.”

Honda does note that Gold Wing models with its dual-clutch transmission (DCT) are not part of this recall.

The affected motorcycles are as follows:

MAKE MODEL MODEL YEAR(S)
HONDA GL1800 2020 – 2022

Notification schedule

In its report to NHTSA, Honda said it would begin notifying owners of the recall on August 20, 2022.

Honda’s repair plan

Honda says that registered owners of all affected vehicles will be contacted by mail and asked to take their vehicle to an authorized Honda dealer. The dealer will reprogram the ECU with an updated file containing the proper ignition timing control for free. Owners who have paid to have these repairs completed at their own expense will be eligible for reimbursement in accordance with the recall reimbursement plan on file with NHTSA.
