We’re sad to report that American Flat Track racer Ryan Varnes has died from injuries suffered in a crash at Upstate New York Production Twins Main Event this past Saturday. He was 24 years old.

Varnes, from Pennsylvania, was competing at the Weedsport racetrack when he was involved in a crash on Lap 4. Track safety crews responded immediately and Varnes was transported to a hospital in Syracuse, NY, but succumbed to his injuries. An exact cause of death or a cause of the crash have not been released.

“Ryan was the class of the field, both on track and off track. His bright smile, perpetual optimism and loyal friendship will be dearly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends,” Gene Crouch, COO of AMA Pro Racing, said in a statement following news of Varnes passing. Varnes had competed in two races this season, and entered one race during the 2021 season.

Varnes had recently graduated from Penn State with a degree in accounting. Motorcycle racing runs in the Varnes family; both his father and grandfather were racers, and Ryan raced under number 68, his grandfather’s number. His parents also met at a motorcycle race.

According to several news reports, Varnes was a registered organ donor, and while his death is tragic, we are confident his decision to donate his organs will save or improve the lives of others. Donations to his family to cover memorial costs can be made at the Rookies of ’79 memorial and assistance fund.

No memorial service announcement has been made as of yet. ADVrider extends our condolences to Varnes’ family and to his flat track competitors.
