advrider
While we normally see next-year model updates in late summer or early fall, BMW has just taken the wraps off next year’s R1250 GS. That’s well ahead of the fall’s Intermot show in Cologne, where we traditionally see such releases. So what’s the rush? Hard to say, because there aren’t many updates to the R1250 GS. We do see a new model confirmed; the GS Trophy, which comes with “Gravity blue metallic with Cross-spoke wheels, Rally seat, Sport windshield, radiator protectors, frame protectors, Enduro footrests and more.” Is this the same bike as the GS Trophy Competition, launched back in June? [embedded content] Well, it isn’t terribly different, anyway, and it replaces the 40th-anniversary edition of the R1250 GS. There are some changes to next year’s big-bore GS, but they’re small. Tire pressure monitoring is now available on all R1250 GS and its Adventure sub-models with keyless operation; the tire pressure monitoring unit will also work with a second wheel set, if you have separate sets for street and dirt. And, it’s included in the comfort package. With the exception of the G310 GS, the same rules apply to the rest of BMW’s GS and XR lineups. In the F750/850/900 models, the M-series Endurance Chain is now included in the comfort packages, which should theoretically reduce the amount of chain replacements you need. Aside from that, the changes appear to all mostly paint scheme changes, just the same as Triumph announced for many of its models as well this week. That doesn’t mean new bikes won’t be unveiled at Intermot or EICMA (maybe we see the R1300 GS prototype then?). But it probably does mean that the manufacturers are watching the world’s shaky financial situation, and aren’t keen to spend a lot of cash unveiling new machines.
