advrider
The AGV Sportmodular is one of the most flash helmets in the world of motorcycling. Expensive, made of trick materials, and offering the safety of a full-face motorcycle helmet in a flip-front package. But, it’s not made for all-day touring duty. AGV has finally got around to remedying that issue, with the new Tourmodular. As the name implies, the Tourmodular is a variation on the Sportmodular design, but with compromises that bring the price down and the weight up. Instead of full carbon-fiber construction, the Tourmodular uses a carbon-aramid-fiberglass blend. That pushes the weight to 1,620 grams, as opposed to the Spormodular’s 1,295 grams. It comes in four different shell sizes. Why the compromise? The Tourmodular is made for all-day riding, and designed to also mount a communicator unit. There’s no point in stripping this thing down when it’s going to have extra weight bolted on. This allows AGV to keep prices slightly more reasonable (MSRP for the Tourmodular is $600ish USD, as opposed to $750+ for the Sportmodular). Despite the lower price (still not cheap!), you get a helmet shell that’s designed for aerodynamic performance; AGV says it has zero dynamic weight at 80 mph (120 km/h). Want to ride with the front flipped open? AGV thought about that, too, and even designed the chin guard for optimal aeros when it’s open in the jet helmet configuration. You might not need to flip the front open, though, with four front vents (one rear vent) flowing air, and a small crack opening setting on the face shield, for airflow while keeping the shield protecting your eyes. Speaking of eyes: AGV emphasized vision with this helmet, with 190 degrees of horizontal field of view, and 85 degrees of vertical field of view. AGV also thoughtfully includes a 100% Max Vision Pinlock, something other pricey helmet manufacturers don’t necessarily include with your purchase. It’s an all-season helmet, too. There’s a cool Ritmo/Shalimar liner—well actually, both cool and hot. This reversible liner can switch around for warm or cold days. AGV promises “instant sweat absorption.” Thoughtful, for the all-day ride. And if you want tunes while you ride, or bike-to-bike comms, you can do that too, with AGV’s proprietary INSYDE comm system, that can integrate into the helmet (powered by Cardo’s technology). You can see a full list of specs and safety features at AGV’s website. Looks like a nicely-designed helmet, all in all, with lots of thought into what riders want—which leaves us asking, when do we get an adventure bike version?
