BioLite Portable Power Series Promises Independence from the Grid

Advances in battery and charging technology have made life easier for adventure riders who like to travel to remote locations, but still require a reliable source of power for electronics. Instead of heading back to civilization to charge a laptop in order to finish a report the boss wants by Monday, a portable power pack means a rider can stay put and enjoy the view by the fire while crunching numbers. The Portable Power Series from BioLite Energy is a new line of power packs that includes units small enough to fit most motorcycle top cases. AC, DC, and USB connections, and solar recharging options are available.

Of particular interest to motorcyclists would be the BaseCharge 600, a lithium ion power station that can provide 600 watts of power (up to 1200 watts surge), wireless charging capabilities, and an LCD dashboard for real-time feedback. The pack measures 309 x 200 x 201 mm (12.2 x 7.9 x 7.9 in), a reasonable size for a pack this powerful. BioLite claims the 600 can recharge the average laptop battery nine times, a smartphone 48 times, or power an electric cooler for 15 hours. Recharging the 600 itself takes seven hours on AC, or as little as 3.5 hours via AC and a USB-C PD connection.

A separate solar panel accessory, the SolarPanel 100, can recharge the BaseCharge 600 in about six hours, and folds flat for portability. ETFE lamination promises durability, a built-in sundial makes aiming easier, and foldable kickstands keep the panels properly aligned.

U.S.-based BioLite Energy began with a product called the BioLite CampStove, an award-winning design that creates a vortex of smokeless flames, and also harnesses the heat energy to create electricity to charge batteries and electronics. The BaseCharge 600 is their latest endeavor into sustainable, portable energy. For more information, visit https://www.bioliteenergy.com.
