advrider
KTM North America (KTM) is recalling certain 2019 through 2023 KTM and Husqvarna motorcycles equipped with Continental TKC80 tires. Back in May, we told you about Continental’s recall of the TKC80 and several other tire models. t that time, Continental also advised that some of the defective tires may already have been in possession of three OEMs: KTM, Husqvarna, and BMW. This recall is apparently KTM/Husqvarna’s response to the faulty tire issue. KTM’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report to NHTSA KTM’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says 23,399 motorcycles may be affected. In the report, KTM says: “CTA (Continental Tires) has reported that several motorcycle tire products of the TKC80 tire lines developed superficial cracking in the tread grooves during conformance of production FMVSS 119 endurance testing.” Then, describing the safety risk, KTM reports: “CTA has reported, during FMVSS 119 testing, superficial groove cracks in the tread rubber developed, however these cracks did not propagate into the reinforcing materials of the tires. Cracks in the tread can lead to tread separation, increasing the risk of a crash.” KTM also notes that depending on the motorcycle model affected, only one or both tires may have to be replaced.
