Cyber Attack Shuts Down BRP

BRP, the parent company of Can-Am, was been effectively shut down by a cyber attack on August 8, 2022. “BRP took immediate measures to contain the situation,” said the company in a press release. “The Company has activated its internal network of IT professionals and retained the services of cybersecurity experts to assist in securing its systems and support its internal investigation. Operations have been suspended temporarily, which may delay certain transactions with customers and suppliers.”

This is standard operating procedure for a company facing a cyber attack. It allows BRP’s own IT department as well as cybersecurity SWAT teams get the situation under control. Unfortunately, this severely disrupts day-to-day business activities, effectively preventing BRP from doing “business as usual.” This is why they warned that transactions would be delayed.

What Happened?

ITBusiness.ca reports that as of August 11 BRP had restored some servers. BRP itself said it had the Valcourt, Quebec factory up and running again by Monday, August 15. Even this update had very little information about the nature of the attack. This is to prevent perpetrators of the attack from knowing what BRP knows and altering their tactics. Cyber security is a game of measures and countermeasures that combines chess with cat-and-mouse. The main difference is that fewer pawns get knocked off the table because actual cats are not involved.

This attack put quite a damper on Can-Am’s virtual unveiling of two new electric motorcycles, the Origin and Pulse, the same day as the attack (although it seems likely these events were related).
