Unfortunately, the downward trend of moto theft in the US is reversing. New National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) figures show that motorcycle thefts are up 26 percent over 2019. The new statistics reverse the figures from 2020 to 2021, where thefts were down by 3 percent.

Most thefts by state

California again leads the nation in total thefts with 9,345 bikes stolen. Next is Texas with 4,263, Florida with 3,698, New York with 2,662, and the state of Washington state rounding up the top five at 1,947.

Most stolen brands

If you are wondering which motorcycle brands were stolen the most, the NICB provides the following data:

  • Honda (10,282)
  • Yamaha (8,185)
  • Kawasaki (5,904)
  • Harley-Davidson (5,811)
  • Suzuki (4,890)

Of all the approximately 52,000 bikes stolen in the United States in 2021, less than half have been recovered. Only 42 percent have been found.

Securing your ride

To help reduce moto thefts, the NICB suggests the following common sense ideas:

  • Park in well-lit areas, lock your ignition, and remove your keys.
  • Lock your cycle even when stored in a garage.
  • Consider investing in an alarm system.
  • Don’t store your title in your motorcycle’s storage compartment.
  • Place unique markings on your motorcycle and take photos of them.  You can use these markings to help identify your property.
  • Don’t walk off from an idling bike.  It will make it a prime target for thieves.

While not everyone has access to a garage, the remaining suggestions can help you keep your ride.

Report your stolen moto to law enforcement immediately. The NICB says quick reporting increases the chance of recovering your bike.
