With the recent uptick in interest for retro-styled trailbikes, we also see a corresponding interest in retro-styled gear to match. That means boots with lots of buckles, waxed cotton jackets and of course, old-fashioned helmets—helmets like the new A.T.P, coming as a collaboration from Malle and NEXX.

It may look old, and isn’t exactly filled with features, but it is made of the very best materials, and should be the sort of thing to last you a long, long time.

Who are Malle and NEXX?

Malle is a UK-based outfit that manufacturers overlanding gear, riding equipment and other kit—see their web shop here. NEXX is a helmet manufacturer based in Portugal, still making its gear in Europe when so many other manufacturers have outsourced their production overseas. Like Malle, NEXX specializes in products that lean towards the, errrrr, hipper side of motorcycling. So, when reps from these brands had a chance meeting a motorcycle race, it’s unsurprising that they started looking at ways they could work together. The A.T.P. helmet is the result.

Here’s how Malle describes the A.T.P.:

‘All Terrain Protection’ – the concept/title for this unique helmet design – was born from spending countless days/weeks/months on the road solo, or with the Malle community and responding to the vast range of demands the road, the journey and the rider experience and the creation of an ultra safe, lightweight and customisable helmet that sits comfortably and performs incredibly in each environment.

Whether you’re winding your way up through the wilds of Great Britain or The Alps on one of our rallies, crossing a continent, riding the daily commute, on a transcontinental expedition, or simply racing off road with your friends, the A.T.P helmet is designed to perform in each terrain and for every environment.

It is a very basic, old-school design, but the marketing continuously mentions how it was designed with safety in mind, and considering some of the flimsy competition in this space, it’s a quality that’s worth looking for. The shell is made of carbon fiber, for strength, and that keeps weight down to 2.9 lb. There are reflective bits of trim around the helmet, and it should meet Europe’s new ECE helmet standard.

A snap-on peak comes standard, as with most ADV/dirt helmets, but it’s a bit shorter than what you’ll find on most dirt bike lids; which should mean less turbulence on the highway. You can obviously wear goggles with the A.T.P. helmet, but it also comes with a tinted quick-detach eyeshield, which attaches via those snaps at the sides of the eyeport.

As far as modern comfort features, NEXX did put a vent in the chinbar for better ventilation, and made the lining removable.

So, all in all, nothing earth-shattering here, but it does appear to be a well-made piece of kit. It’s supposed to start shipping to customers in fall of 2022, with sizes from XS to XXL, and a $482 USD price tag. Yikes. Some of my motorcycles cost less than that. But not everyone is a cheapskate like me; some people like nice things, and if that includes you, you can find more details here.
