Video: Life, Death And Riding

Not everyone is old, but everyone is getting older. So how do we handle that, in relation to our dual sport and adventure riding careers?

Do we go out and hit a mid-life (or late-life) crisis, buy the flashiest machine we can afford, and live as fast as we can for the time we have left?

Or should we scale back on our expenses, instead focusing on experiences in the time we have left, instead of speed?

YouTuber Barry Morris is back with the Cross Training Adventure channel, with thoughts about how our riding career changes as we get older:

Here’s how he ends it:

How many of us will say on our deathbed “I should have spent more time at work and less riding motorbikes”. If you are in your fifties or older, what are your thoughts? Live for the moment? Or plan for the future?

Good questions indeed, and it’s been interesting to see the choices my older friends have made over the years, and the choices I see myself steering towards. In my own life, nothing had more impact on my motorcycling career than having kids. I don’t think it changed my riding style, at least not tooooo much… but I would say it probably discouraged me from spending more money and time in the pursuit of getting faster. I had other things to spend money on, and other responsibilities to think about.

Obviously, in his 50s, Morris is in a different place than I am, but he’s very much looking forward to the future, it seems.

So are some of you. It’s a topic that gets discussed every once in a while here at the ADVrider forum, including the Aging Road Rider Thread and the Aging Enduro Rider Thread, and countless others with different names but the same questions: How do we handle getting older, and what does it mean for our motorcycling choices?
