advrider
GoPro just announced its latest action cameras, the HERO11 Black, the HERO11 Creator Edition and the HERO11 Black Mini. What do to they have to offer, besides some puzzling capitalization choices in the titles? It seems the GoPro line is once again going to divert into streams aimed at specific market segments. The Black will be the flagship camera, and the Mini will be a more compact unit, easily mounted for rough-and-tumble usage. The Creator Edition is basically the Black, but with useful accessories pre-installed. Underneath their skins, the cameras offer many of the same features: The ability to highlight videos and have them automatically sent to your mobile device, making it easier to download your footage. Hypersmooth 5.0 stabilization technology. Horizon Lock. A new, larger camera sensor that captures in 8:7 aspect ratio, so your footage is easily cropped for social media (with the rise of vertical video in Instagram Reels and other similar social media formats, this is something many users will want). And, all cameras record footage well past 4K, the previous standard. The HERO11 Black and Creator Edition both come with GoPro’s new removable Enduro battery, which is more resistant to cold weather. The HERO11 Black and the Creator Edition shoot 5.3K60 footage, or if you want slow-mo, 2.7K240 resolution. They also offer 24.7 megapixel stills from video. While not all of us need such photographic firepower, if you’re serious about creating for YouTube, this offers a lot of capability. See the teaser video below: [embedded content] Again, the Creator Edition is basically the same camera, with battery grip and added-on Media Mod and Light Mod. Asking price for this is $699.99, and the standard GoPro HERO11 Black is $599.99, but if you are a subscriber to the GoPro service (which includes footage storage in the cloud, unlimited usage of the Quik editing app and other perks), then you’ll save quite a bit of cash—roughly $60 off the Creator Edition, and about $100 off the standard camera. Of course, if you aren’t in the US, pricing will differ in your market. GoPro HERO11 Mini Speaking as a consumer of action cameras (I have been testing them for years, both demo models sent from companies and cams I’ve bought myself), GoPro has a bit of a problem in that for a long time. For years, it has really only offered one current-gen product, and it’s more than most amateur consumers need. It’s packed with features that only pros will use. Sure, you can buy an older, previous-gen product and save some cash, but most consumers don’t want that. For many users, even pros who are buying multiple cameras, there’s been a bit of a market opening for a slightly stripped-down camera, but with the latest tech inside. That’s where the HERO11 Mini comes in. To keep cost, size and battery consumption down, there are no front or rear screens on this camera. It’s the ultimate KISS actioncam. GoPro hasn’t released this camera yet; it’s coming out in October. Basically, you’re getting a non-removable battery, and video capability that’s slightly behind the Black series—but not very far behind. And you’re saving some money, with a $399 price tag in the US (of course, subscribers will save $$). See GoPro’s teaser vid below; it’s an interesting idea, and no doubt plenty of people who are only filming short clips for social media will see the advantage of this stripped-down camera.
