advrider
In an unusual move, KTM announced a new motorcycle model Friday at a rider event… in Idaho. The unveiling took place at the KTM Adventure Ride Rally at the Tamarack Resort near Donnelly, Idaho, where hundreds of riders had gathered for the 17th running of the annual rally after a covid hiatus. ADVrider.com was on hand for the unveiling. Winning rider Kevin Benavides (below) was also on hand for the festivities. Photo: Bill Roberson KTM says the 890 Adventure R’s 889cc P-Twin will produce 105 horsepower and the bike weighs 432 pounds dry. A key feature is a new single-piece 5.3 gallon horse-collar type fuel cell that wraps around the engine, keeping weight low on the bike. The tank, developed with input from Acerbis, keeps the motorcycle thin for the rider, while expanding riding range. Pro rider Chris Birch was also on hand for the presentation, and can be seen getting some impressive hang time out of the 890 Adventure R in the video below. To that end, the 890 Adventure R includes cruise control as an option and a standard comfort-oriented seat. I personally sat on the bike and for this 6-foot-1 rider, it felt roomy with a neutral riding position similar to that of its close cousin, the Husqvarna Norden 901. Heated grips and a heated seat are available options. A new 5-inch TFT display features new graphics and can also show turn-by-turn information via an app, along with phone comms information. Wheels are a 21/18 inch combo shod in Continental TKC 80 tires (in the U.S.) as stock. The front fork is a stout 48mm WP XPLOR model with an XPLOR PDS monoshock out back, both with 9.4 inches of travel. Image: KTM The tech package includes numerous ride modes Street, Offroad, Rain and optional Rally ride modes, Motorcycle Traction Control (MTC), Motor Slip Regulation (MSR). KTM said that putting the 890 Adventure R into Offroad mode will now automatically switch ABS off at the back wheel while setting front wheel ABS to minimal intervention, but it cannot be turned off completely due to regulations. All ride mode options are available to buyers for the first 1,500km of riding, after which upgrades can be purchased after owners determine which additional modes, if any, suit their needs. Pricing for the bike and the options was not specified at the unveiling, but KTM did say that the new model will be in showrooms, including U.S. dealers, likely by November of this year.
