“The kids just aren’t getting into motorcycling”—or at least, that’s the story we heard from a lot of concerned insiders through the 2010s, who feel they weren’ tselling as many motorcycles as they should. Maybe they were right, maybe they were wrong, but we’ve certainly seen dealership after dealership selling out of small-to-medium displacement motorcycles over the past three years, as well as most of the big-bore bikes, as long as the price tags are reasonable. And, those sales numbers are backed up by a boost in new-rider training.

The latest figures from the UK show a massive jump there, with the number of new riders taking the Module 2 riding test at an all-time high over 2021-2022. According to the official British government numbers (available here), between April of 2021 and March of 2022, 67,511 riders took the Module 2 test. That’s at least 2,000 riders more than ever than have before.

Passing your Module 2 is no guarantee you’ll become a lifelong motorcyclist, but it shows you’ve mastered basic riding skills and rules of the road, and know how to perform basic safety checks on your bike. If you pass your Module 2, you’re headed in the right direction. Upon successful completion, you’re allowed to start riding on public streets with L plates, immediately.

That’s good news, but note that the bast majority of riders taking the Module 2 test were male, outnumbering female riders by a ratio of about 12 to 1. No doubt this is something the industry would very much like to change, and we already see some marketing campaigns (Royal Enfield, for instance) making a massive effort in this area here at home in North America.
