advrider Posted October 5, 2022 Share Posted October 5, 2022 Ducati North America is recalling certain 2016 to 2018 Hyperstrada 939, Hypermotard 939, and Hypermotard 939 SP motorcycles under Ducati recall number SRV-RCL-22-002 and NHTSA recall number 22V-704. According to the manufacturer, the oil cooler hoses on affected motorcycles may come into each other and cause an oil leak. Ducati’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report to NHTSA Ducati’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says 1,586 motorcycles, or about 1 percent of these Ducati models, may be affected. In its report, Ducati says: The two oil cooler hoses could contact each other, causing damage to them, generating an oil leak. Then, describing the safety risk, Ducati says: If the defect occurs, the oil cooler hoses could be damaged and cause an oil leak. The oil leaking could drip on the rear tire, increasing the risk of crash or injury. The motorcycles affected by this recall are as follows: MAKE MODEL MODEL YEAR(S) DUCATI HYPERMOTARD 939 2016 – 2018 DUCATI HYPERSTRADA 939 2016 – 2018 Chronology of the recall Ducati says that In February 2022, they received a report from the field about an oil leak from the bike’s oil cooler hoses. They then decided to launch an investigation into the leak and ultimately found 19 cases of similar leaking worldwide. Eight of those cases were found in the USA. At the end of their investigation, Ducati determined the root cause as the two oil cooler hoses could come into contact and eventually damage the hose to the point that an oil leak could occur. Then on September 20, 2022, Ducati’s internal safety commission decided to implement a recall. Recall identification Potentially affected bikes were produced between December 10, 2015 – July 4, 2018. As such, the affected machines fall within the following VIN ranges: VIN Range 1: Begin: ZDM1YBJSXGB012054 — End: ZDM1YBJS0GB013021 – Not sequentialVIN Range 2: Begin: ZDM1YBJS9GB012028 — End: ZDM1YBJS3JB013909 – SequentialVIN Range 3: Begin: ZDM1YBJS4GB012034 — End: ZDM1YBJS9JB013915 – Sequential Recall Schedule Ducati has already started notifying its dealers of the recall. However, notification to owners will not start until October 20, 2022, and it may take Ducati 60 days to complete the owner notification process. Remedy Ducati dealers will install a spacer between the oil cooler hoses to prevent them from coming into contact with each other.
