Feld Motorsports and MX Pro Racing have announced the inaugural 2023 SuperMotocross World Championship schedule. If you are unfamiliar with the new world championship, it will combine competitors from the Monster Energy Supercross Championship and the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship.

Both series will continue to crown their own champions as usual. But after their respective championships, the top 22 250cc athletes and the top 22 450cc athletes in combined Supercross and Pro Motocross points will qualify to compete in the SuperMotocross World Championship.

Supermotocross Playoff rounds

The new series will feature two SuperMotocross Playoff Rounds and a World Championship round for the SuperMotocross #1 plate and the sport’s richest payout. The total purse available is $10 million, representing the biggest purse in either championship’s history.

For a better understanding of SuperMotoCross, how the series will operate, and some of the rules, check out the video below:

Starting on New Year’s Day, 2023, the gate will drop on the entire 17-round Monster Energy Supercross season. It will conclude at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah, on May 13, 2023. Then, with only a two-week “rest,” the full 11-round Pro Motocross Championship will start May 27th. This series will run through August 26, 2023, and conclude with the Ironman National in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

Supercross and Motocross combined into SuperMotocross

According to the Pro Motocross Championship, the SuperMotocross World Championship will:

…combine both disciplines of Supercross and Pro Motocross, introducing a unique and distinct form of racing called SuperMotocross, hence becoming a new discipline for the sport. Custom-designed tracks will be built to showcase this new style of racing. World-class venues will allow room to integrate the best track designs from Supercross, Pro Motocross and now SuperMotocross, finally providing a stage where the sport’s ultimate debate can be decided – who is the best in the world and ultimately crowning a new overall champion.

After completing both individual series, the top 22 riders in the 250 and 450 classes will have the opportunity to compete in the SuperMotocross Playoff rounds. After the playoffs, riders will compete in the final World Championship round. Riders may also qualify for the playoff rounds by winning a Supercross Main Event or Pro Motocross Overall victory.

The SuperMotocross World Championship final rounds will begin with Supermotocross Playoff Round 1 on September 9, 2023. Round 2 starts on September 23, 2023, with the finale on October 14, 2023, in Los Angeles, California.

At the conclusion of the SuperMotocross series, the winner will receive the SMX Number 1 plate. They will receive the most lucrative prize money in either of the sports’ histories. With more than $10M on the line, you can expect a good selection of current Supercross and Pro Motocross stars.

New rule book

Leadership from both Feld Motorsports and MX Pro Racing will work together to create a new unified rule book. Once finalized, it will be used throughout all three series championships. Finally, both organizations will collaborate to provide their marketing and operational expertise. If successful, they plan to grow the new championship both domestically and internationally.

SuperMotoCross leadership

Of course, the heads of both series are excited about the new championship. Carrie Coombs-Russel, the Chief Executive Officer of MX Sports Pro Racing, had this to say about the new championship series:

“We are celebrating 50 years of American Motocross this season, and the creation of the SuperMotocross World Championship and working in unison with Supercross may be one of the most significant changes the sport has ever undertaken. This collaboration will create the only off-road racing series on the planet that provides a fully supported infrastructure, from amateur development to the professional ranks for global competitors to race on the world’s most challenging and demanding tracks.”

Kenneth Feld, Fled Entertainment’s Chairman and CEO, went on to say:

“This has been two-and-a-half years in the making. Feld Motor Sports and MX Sports Pro Racing initially came together to preserve a 2020 racing season during the pandemic and soon realized we’re stronger together. We asked ourselves, ‘How can we better the sport?’ And from that emerged the concept for the SuperMotocross World Championship. We’re dedicated to retaining the history of each respective championship and will continue to crown individual champions for both disciplines, but we’ll now come together to crown an ultimate champion.”

OEM manufacturers

Also showing their commitment to the new off-road series are all seven primary original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). KTM, Husqvarna, GasGas, Kawasaki, Honda, Yamaha, and Suzuki will compete with factory-supported race teams. Many representatives from the manufacturers chimed in with their thoughts about the new championship.

Roger DeCoster, KTM’s Director of Motorsports, said:

“The creation of the SuperMotocross World Championship is the biggest and most positive step to ever happen in our sport. Supercross and Motocross racing in the U.S. is very strong right now, and this investment from Feld Motor Sports and MX Sports Pro Racing will bring the next generation of fans to motorcycling.”

Of course, you can attend the SuperMotocross events in person at the series’ different venues. Streaming and TV schedules are TBA.
