advrider
For the past nine years, the Road Warrior Foundation (RWF) has teamed up with Can-Am to present the annual Adventure Therapy ride, taking a group of military veterans out on the road on Can-Am Spyder three-wheelers. The ride gives the veterans a chance to experience the healing power of being on the open road, allowing them to uncouple from their regular routine and connect with likeminded strangers with similar experiences. This year’s ride covered over 1,000 miles, starting in Deland, Florida, at the 2022 Fall Spyder, Bike & Trike Fest. From there, the ride snaked through Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania, before arriving in Columbus, Ohio, six days later. Younger participants are selected, in their 20s and 30s, with various physical or mental injuries, based on their eagerness for fun and adventure. The Spyder three-wheelers, provided by title sponsor Can-Am, provided the perfect mounts, especially for riders with leg or balance problems, giving them an opportunity to enjoy the freedom of motorcycling but with the security of three contact patches. Can-Am also provided a full set of gear for the riders, providing both crash and weather protection. Some of the participants only had their motorcycle licenses for a short time, and many also had very little group riding experience, so Day 1 included classroom and closed-course training provided by Can-Am and the RWF. From there, the ride headed out on open road, finishing at the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum in Columbus, Ohio. By combining powersports and adventure, the RWF endeavours to take veterans, once highly trained in their fields but no longer able to execute the tasks they prepared so intensely to perform, back in control and in the driver’s seat. The RWF strives to use as much of the donation money and resources they receive directly towards the benefit of the veterans, with as little overhead as possible. The Road Warrior Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, with all donations being tax deductible, and go directly toward funding veteran adventures.
