Electric off-road motorcycles might just be the catalyst the industry needs to jump start the mass acceptance of battery bikes. Low noise and the lack of tailpipe emissions will help satisfy landowners and environmentalists, while the ease of use, loads of torque, and low maintenance demands will keep riders happy. They also occupy an interesting space between the mountain ebike and conventional internal combustion motocross bike, with the potential to draw customers from both segments. Now, with Surron’s Storm Bee launching in North America, we see a new addition to the space that should be widely available and still relatively affordable when compared to other electric dirt bikes of the past couple of years.

The Storm Bee F follows up on the success of the Surron Light Bee X, a smaller electric off-roader that cuts a profile closer to a downhill mountain bike, and a weight of only 50 kg (110 lbs). The Storm Bee F takes things to the next level with full-sized dimensions and motorcycle-specific parts. Judging by the action photos provided by DIAN, the Storm Bee F isn’t just a styling exercise—it’s a real, functional dirt bike, although the press release says it’s designed for the “casual” off-road rider.

The bike is powered by a liquid-cooled, brushless electric motor and a 104V/55 Ah battery pack. The output is 22.5 kW of peak power, and a considerable 520 Nm of torque (about 30 hp and 383 ft lbs), with a top speed of 110 km/h (68 mph). Range is listed as “a maximum of 120 km” (74.5 miles), with a charging time of three to four hours using a conventional 120V wall outlet.

The Storm Bee F boasts an advanced electronics suite that includes traction control to tame all that torque, which Surron calls ASR (Acceleration Slip Reduction), regenerative engine braking (BERS, or Brake Energy Regenerative System) to maximize range, and three riding modes: Sport, Rain, and Eco. It also includes two extra party tricks in the form of a turbo button, for a short extra boost of power, and a reverse gear, to help back out of tricky situations.

The chassis and suspension follow dirt bike norms, with 290 mm (11.4″) of suspension travel front and rear via an inverted fork and monoshock. The spec sheet lists the fork as having compression and rebound adjustability, and the shock as being “fully adjustable”. Bike weight is 127 kg (280 lb), with a seat height of 940 mm (37″). The 21″ front wheel and 18″ rear are shod with 80/100-21 and 100/90-18 off road tires.

DIAN is also the primary U.S. distributor of Surron bikes, and the Storm Bee F for North America also comes with a headlight and number plate. DIAN are celebrating the Canadian release of the Storm Bee F by offering a gift pack worth $200 to the first 100 customers to place a $500 deposit on the bike. MSRP is $8,499 in the US, $10,999 in Canada.
