Like Oddball Bikes? A Long List Of Unique Rides Just Went To Auction

A number of motorcycles recently went to auction in Italy, and while most auctions are filled with pristinely preserved rarities destined to go for six figures, an auction by Aste Bolaffi skews well south of those kinds of numbers. The motorcycles, scooters and mopeds on offer were definitely rare, but many have seen plenty of road time and sport the patina of some hard miles. They were, as they say, priced accordingly.

Most of the names are certainly familiar – Vespa, Moto Guzzi, Gilera, Laverda, Piaggio, Norton and more – but there were some more left-field entries as well from Rumi, Solex, ITOM, and Ocma. A few more familiar entries from Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki helped round out the international flavor. The prices were right, with bids on some lots starting around $150 USD. Sure, there were some spendy lots, but someone also picked up a rare-as-hen’s teeth ITOM Astor Sirio 50cc two-stroke enduro (top photo) for under $1,400 USD, while a 1940 Norton M18 with a sidecar rolled away for just under $5,000 USD.

And if your moto freak flag has a two-stroke with a sidecar on it, a clean 1978 Jawa 350 with sidehack (above) to scratch that itch went for just $2,900 USD. You probably won’t see any of those at the next swap meet.

Bikes ranged from pre-war on up to perhaps the most modern bike on offer, Lot 131, a 1999 Honda VTR 250 heavily massaged by Beestudio in partnership with Design Service Network in Japan, which resulted in the DSN “V-PER” (below) with a trellis frame, sharky, angular bodywork and “Vibrated Performance” on the gas tank. Lose the name but keep the look and Honda likely could have sold a zillion of these. As such, it went to a new owner for about $4,000 USD, and they’ll need to get it running again as well.

There were also two rally-raid ready Vespas up for consideration in lots 133 and 134 (below), but neither sold. Still, both are worth a look and the auction catalog is chock full of great photos of each bike.
