Royal Enfield Himalayan 452 Rumors: Bigger, More Powerful

For the past few years, we’ve had a steady stream of info leaked on the potential release of a new Royal Enfield Himalayan. In recent weeks, that stream of info has now become a constant near-deluge of spy photos, videos and even a widely-accepted list of specs for the new bike. Now, we have a potential horsepower rating and some other data.

According to the Indian moto-press, the new machine will have a 451.6cc liquid-cooled engine—hence the Royal Enfield Himalayan 452 name.

The main source of this info seems to be Zigwheels, which claims to have gotten its hands on a leaked spec sheet. This paperwork indicates the new Royal Enfield Himalayan 452 should make about 40 hp at 8,000 rpm, making it a much higher-revving bike than the current 411 model. The current air-cooled model makes a claimed 24ish hp at 6,500 rpm.

The new liquid-cooled engine is obviously the biggest news on the new machine as it is the first modern-ish engine that Royal Enfield has built in many decades (Royal Enfield has brought out a few new powerplants in recent years, but they are all air/oil-cooled). However, other details in Zigwheels’ uncovered paperwork are also interesting.

The documents also indicate the wheelbase has stretched from 1465 mm (on the Himalayan 411) to 1510 mm, and that overall length is now upped from 2190 mm to 2245 mm. The machine is 852 mm wide at the handlebars, or 900 mm if you have RE’s factory handguards installed. Previously, the old 411 model was only 840 mm wide.

So, you’re looking at a new travel bike that’s bigger and more powerful. We’ve seen no word on the weight yet, but this is often where Royal Enfield’s North American customers start to complain. The old 411 was hefty, at 440 lb at the curb. It would be great to see the factory cut a bit of that weight, but even if they can stay at the same point, having 15 more horsepower will be a big improvement on the power-to-weight ratio. But if the new 452 weighs even more than the 411? Expect vigorous complaining from the peanut gallery…
