advrider
Who’s the best Honda wrencher in the world? A new contest will give us the answer. Honda has just invited 23 of their top service technicians from all over the world to compete against one another in the first Honda Global Motorcycle Technician Contest. The first one was held on Sunday, October 8, 2023, in Japan at Honda Technical College Kanto (Fujimino-shi, Saitama Prefecture). Digging around online, it seems like a mechanic from Indonesia won this year’s contest, from the PT Daya Adicipta Motora dealership. Alas, after promoting this contest worldwide, Honda itself hasn’t told us who won! But they do say this is going to be an important contest for the company in the years to come. “Currently, Honda dealerships around the world receive more than 140 million service visits per year, and improving the technical skills of the service staff that support these visits is more important than ever,” said Noriaki Abe, Managing Executive Officer, Chief Officer, Motorcycle and Power Products Operations in a press release. “Through this contest, we will continue to work for further improvement of customer satisfaction around the world by sharing our service philosophy of making our customers happy.” In this year’s face-off of skill and know-how, competitors faced off in three categories. The knowledge competition measured the technicians’ knowledge of mechanism and maintenance. The off-vehicle competition included assembly and disassembly of certain components, measurement, and adjustment. The on-vehicle competition included diagnosis, repair, and completion inspection of specific Honda motorcycles. In each category, judges watched for both speed and accuracy, making sure that technicians follow Honda’s policies and procedures throughout the process. This year, competitors entered one of two divisions. The under 250cc division focused on the Honda Super Cub 110, while the 250cc and above division worked on the CB650R. This is the first competition of its kind that Honda has held, but it won’t be the last. Honda plans to hold this every four years. You’ve heard of King of the Hammers. Let’s call this King of the Hondas. I can’t change the official name of this contest, but that’s what I’ll be calling it in my mind.
