Harley-Davidson Recalls Certain X350 RA Training Bikes

Harley-Davidson is recalling certain X350 RA motorcycles because the fuel sensor mounted to the bottom of the motorcycle’s fuel tank may leak fuel. Only motorcycles manufactured on or before 8/30/2023 are subject to this recall. Motorcycles manufactured after this date have already had a replacement gasket installed, which remedies the potential fuel leak.

The motorcycles in the recall population are used in Harley’s Harley-Davidson Riding Academy, owned by independent authorized Harley-Davidson dealers for use in their motorcycle riding education programs. None of these model motorcycles have been sold to the general public in the US.

Harley-Davidson’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report to NHTSA

Harley-Davidson’s Part 573 Safety Recall Report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says in total, 1,139 X350 RA motorcycles are part of this recall.

In its report, Harley’s description of the reason for the recall is short and to the point.

“The fuel sensor (HD50800P420000) mounted on the bottom of the fuel tank on affected motorcycles may leak.”

Describing the safety risk, Harley-Davidson says:

“There may not be an adequate seal between the fuel sensor (HD50800P420000) and the bottom of the fuel tank. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source may lead to a fire.”

Faulty fuel sensor – Indications And Warnings

Harley said riders may be able to visually identify a leaking fuel tank by saying:

“Staining or accumulation of debris on underside of tank (signaling fuel weeping) my be noted”

However, the fix appears to involve only the fuel sensor gasket and not the sensor itself.

Harley-Davidson’s repair plan

Harley-Davidson says since all of the affected motorcycles are owned by dealers, they will be advised to complete the recall service. Harley will then reimburse them for the work performed.

Notification schedule

In its report to NHTSA, Harley-Davidson says it will notify its dealers between October 10 and October 13, 2023. Interestingly, they add that owners will be notified between October 16 and October 20, 2023. It’s not clear why they have a separate date for owners, given they said that only dealers own the machines subject to this recall.
