matt-spears-hayabusa-offroad.jpg

About two weeks back, we shared some footage of enduro rider Matt Spears flogging his stock-ish Suzuki Hayabusa off-road, which ended predictably. With a hole in his oil pan, Spears retreated to his garage and started rebuilding his ‘Busa for off-road glory. The end result is, this hyperbike is now more-or-less a dual sport.

Their reconstructive work covers all the bases. They bolt up a 52-tooth sprocket to make the bike more manageable in the dirt. The bike needs off-road tires, so they figure out how to mount knobbies to the Hayabusa’s wide rims, using ratchet straps to squish the tire onto the rim, and also dabbling with pyrotechnical techniques… with varying success. But the tires do get mounted! From there, we see some Dremel work on the fairing, a homemade crash cage mounted and a homemade skid plate bolted underneath.

Maybe they’ve got some adult help that we don’t see, but even if they do, it’s a pretty decent job building a hypersport into something that’s usable outside its original intentions. And then it’s off for a quick test run around the back yard, where Mister Spears rips the lawn to shreds, then off to the woods for a shakedown test. Somewhat surprisingly, nobody’s maimed there, so the final challenge is a long hillclimb.

If you don’t have time to watch the whole thing, tune in around the 22-minute mark for where the fun really starts, and enjoy footage of a ‘Busa used for “woods riding,” with glorious, long sheets of roost being chucked by that pancaked rear knobbie.

If you grew up as a kid in a redneck town where you and your buddies puttered around in barns and sheds, building and riding weirdo mechanical contraptions, you can rest easy after watching this. In at least one corner of America, the locals are keeping the tradition alive and strong. And to all the complainers from the last article: Are you upset that these guys are having fun wrenching, and you’d rather they were on their cellphones, or maybe saving up for an e-scooter? Or are you just sour because they can ride the wheels off a hyperbike in the woods, and you can’t?
