New Suit Of Clothes For The KTM 1290 Adventure Series

Expecting a major update to KTM’s big-bore V-twin adventure series? We’re pretty sure it’s coming, but it won’t be happening for 2024 models. KTM just announced its new 1290 Adventure series for next year, and the only real difference we can see is a paint job.

KTM’s PR opens this way:

KTM announces availability of the 2024 KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S and KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE R, a pair of high-performance Adventure machines that leaves no road or trail out of reach. Wrapped in new livery for the new year, each class-leading model is engineered to conquer mile after mile on all types of terrain.

It turns out the new paint job is “a more neutral but elegant hue of KTM’s graded gray aesthetic.” Aside from that, you’re dealing with the same machine as before, including orange-and-blue paint choices, which is no real shocker. The bikes did get a makeover in late 2022 (minor changes to the steel frame, the latest-gen WP semi-active suspension, newer fuel tank that echoes the 890’s design), so expecting an overhaul a year later seems a bit cheeky.

However, we certainly have seen some indications that KTM is working on a next-generation V-twin, perhaps a 1390. It’s not surprising that we didn’t see it at EICMA this year, but we would be very surprised if we didn’t see it next year! The current 1290 engine has really been around for a few years now, and while that’s certainly no condemnation of it, some jaded consumers are going to want more. It’s human nature, and how the market works—KTM understands that, and will probably reveal a new powerplant for the top-tier Duke models in 2024. In time, that engine tech will work its way into the ADV series.

But for now, you’ll wait—and if you want a ’24 KTM 1290 Adventure S or R, KTM says they’ll be in North American dealerships as of December.
