“Winter’s here. Snow! Slush! Time to put away the bike, I guess.” Thus ends the riding season for many a motorcyclist in North America’s snow belt. But this is not the case for the crew at Ride North Moto. They’re planning out a 2024 expedition now, and you’re invited to join.

Who’s Ride North Moto?

Ride North Moto is probably best described as a collaboration project between friends who were sick of putting away their bikes for the winter. The logical response, then, was to head out on a mid-winter motorcycle ride down a seasonal ice road! These riders from Canada’s oil boomtown of Fort McMurray, Alberta, also realized they had a chance to help out a friend via fundraiser while they were attacking the north on two wheels. Specifically, they were riding through Canada’s largest national park—Wood Buffalo National Park—where an end-to-end trip can only be completed during the winter months when the ice road forms.

It was an epic adventure with a noble goal, and it even had a side quest. This ride gives the motorcyclists the opportunity to see wood buffalo roaming the park mid-winter, a chance to see an animal in its natural habitat that would otherwise be very difficult.

The plans for 2024

Ride North Moto has been inviting other riders to come along and tackle ice roads for a few years now. Recently, they also started running events in warmer temperatures, urging riders to get out and explore the province of Alberta. Now, they’re planning a 2024 mid-winter ride, according to their Facebook page:

Looking for a challenging adventure? Come navigate the frozen landscapes of Northern Alberta on a motorcycle. As you traverse frozen rivers and lakes, the beauty of the Canadian winter unfolds, making the expedition a unique and unforgettable experience.

They don’t list a date, departure point or destination, just a “Keep an eye on the website” admonition. OK then —but we’re looking forward to see where this year’s ride leads. Based on previous years, we’d expect a 2-day or 3-day ride with chase trucks in town, with a combination of heavy Harley-Davidsons and more agile adventure bikes. An unusual mix, but that’s what the event attracts! Keep an eye on RideNorthMoto.com for more details.
