advrider
If you’re British, and you want to ride in the BMW Motorrad GS Trophy competition, you’ll have to travel outside your home country to participate, at least for the 2026 edition. BMW will not be sending a team from the UK for next year’s competition. The GS Trophy is sort of an adventure riding competition for riders on (as the name implies) BMW’s GS motorcycles. You can see a full explainer here, but the TL/DR is, you’ve got to demonstrate bike handling skills, usually in some sort of heavy-duty trials-type competition or enduro course, or combination of both. Often there is also a requirement to demonstrate skills such as navigation, survival, mechanical maintenance or other useful on-the-road know-how. Competitors come from specific countries or regions of countries lumped together, selected for the competition based on skills demonstrated in qualifier competitions in their homelands. The British flag won’t be flying at the 2026 GS Trophy. Photo: BMW But for 2026, this will not be happening for British riders. UK mags are reporting riders in that country got an email saying “Unfortunately BMW Motorrad UK are unable to send a team to the 2026 GS Trophy, therefore we will be taking a hiatus for 2025 and will look to run a GS Trophy qualifier should the option be available to us in the future.” Why is this happening? It almost always comes down to a question of dollars and cents, although it’s not clear exactly how that would come into play here. Other countries have joined the BMW program over the years, or left. Canada hosted the GS Trophy out in the Rockies in 2014, but didn’t send its own team to the next event in 2016, reportedly because a big dealership pulled its sponsorship. It could be something like that for the UK, or some other internal politicking going on. Whatever the case, the Brits have been pretty faithful in their attendance since first entering in 2010, and no doubt there will be plenty of interest in a return trip at their next opportunity.
