advrider
If you’re looking to get inspired, we’ve caught news of a good deal for you. Remember Olivier de Vaulx, the photographer who published that collection of ADV travel work last year? (See our review here). Now, de Vaulx has teamed up with Butler Maps to offer a bundle that should motivate you to hit the road. For years, Butler Maps has been the go-to for motorcyclists planning a serious trip. See rtwPaul’s interview with the founder here. These paper maps focus on the best roads in an area, with some publications that zero in on adventure riding routes and others that are aimed at pavement riders. Here’s what de Vaulx told us about the bundle offer that he’s doing with Butler: Our book and the Adventure Series maps will now be available on both websites at the same price. A special bundle with the book and Adventure Series maps will even be available at a discounted price. Since we received a lot of feedback from riders saying that the book was inspiring them to go back on the trails and explore more, I believe that this offer makes total sense: You get the inspirational content of the book and the planning tool in the form of a map showing the best routes to follow. Can’t make it easier to plan a cool trip just before summer! Some people will probably argue that online tools and GPS devices and phones are more user-friendly than paper maps, but what I know is that I always travel with paper maps accessible from my tank bag: You cannot beat paper maps to see the big picture during a trip or to make informed decisions when changing plans. And it never needs batteries! Also, since one of the purposes of the book was to go back to an analog mode of entertainment, the paper map fits perfectly in the project… Of course, it doesn’t mean that we don’t use GPS, it’s just an additional planning/backup tool that makes life easier. We agree. Screen-based navigation has some powerful advantages, but paper maps do have their place as well. Photo: Olivier de Vaulx You might wonder why de Vaulx and Butler decided to bundle the Adventure Series maps with the photo book, and not the Backcountry Discovery Routes maps, as BDRs are all the rage right now. Photo: Olivier de Vaulx In his email to us, de Vaulx said “The book is all about exploring and not really about following one specific route. The Adventure Series is more interesting in this aspect as it forces people to plan their own trip.” Check out deVaulxPhotography.com for more details and pricing, or ButlerMaps.com.
