  5. Is a Honda Trail 125 for you? We’ve had various ADVers describe their experiences in the forum, and rtwpaul famously rode one to all of the continental 48 states. But if you’re on the fence about buying, here’s another perspective from YouTuber SomeGuyRides. In this case, we’ve got a review that’s based on hard miles along off-road routes like the Trans America Trail as well as back roads and city streets. See above for insight learned over hard miles, and if you want further deets, check out SomeGuyWrites on Substack. There, you can get ride reports that detail the adventures that led to the review above. Other perspectives It’s pretty hard to beat rtwpaul’s insight into the CT125 after his all-over-America ride in the summer of 2022. We ran his four-part series here at ADVrider (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4). Paul also updated his YouTube channel with information he learned along the way—see his Small Bike Survival Guide here. There’s lots of other useful content on the CT if you poke around his YouTube channel, including a toolkit breakdown, a packing list, and more here. The crew at Small Bike Stuff also took the tiny Trail on for a review, and considering their familiarity with these types of machines, their thoughts are worth considering. [embedded content] And of course, we have our own ADVrider forum, with many owners detailing their experiences, whether it’s fitting aftermarket parts or conducting repairs or sharing other useful information. The busiest Trail 125 thread is here. If you’re looking to buy one of these machines second-hand, they seem to regularly appear in the ADVrider Flea Market here. Vezi sursa
  6. One of the interesting adventure bikes at the 2023 EICMA show didn’t come from the usual suspects. In a year filled with adventure bike launches, the CFMOTO MT-X didn’t break any new ground, but it did show the Chinese manufacturer is keen to compete with the established OEMs toe-to-toe. Now, in the months since, there’s been no official information update on the motorcycle, which is surprising, as we expect to see the bike launched as a production model in coming months. But unofficially, we’ve had a couple of looks at the machine’s progress. First-off, Cycle World and some other outlets ran the images below, saying they were from “official design registrations.” I haven’t been able to confirm that with my own web-sleuthing through the European Union’s IP search engine, going through both Euro and non-Euro registrations, as well as WIPO. I can’t guarantee these images are legit, but they certainly appear so. Image: CFMOTO patent Image: CFMOTO patent Image: CFMOTO patent We also have this on-the-road evaluation of the prototype from an Italian mag, presumably filmed after the bike appeared at its EICMA launch: [embedded content] What next? CFMOTO is keen to promote its 450 Ibex, which should hit North America sometime in late summer (see an initial ride review here). But when that bike is finally in showrooms, the MT-X will likely move to the forefront of CFMOTO’s promo programs if it’s indeed going to become a production model. At EICMA in 2023, the company’s execs indicated that it would indeed hit the market in the days to come. Stay tuned; as this bike is closely related to the KTM 790 Adventure, there’s no technological advancement needed to make it a reality, just setting up a production line. Vezi sursa

  8. The backcountry map app onX is looking to reinvest some money into backcountry recreation, with another round Adventure Forever Grants. While most onX users are not petrol-happy gearheads, this program is nevertheless worth looking at, if you’ve got a trail riding club that wants some money to improve trails in your area. The grants are intended to preserve access public access to the backcountry, protecting that access through good stewardship. Already, the company says it’s secured or improved access to 154,000 acres of public land through its 2018-2023 grants, helping to build and maintain 255 miles of trails. Now, the grants are back for 2024, with money available for non-profits, land trusts, tribal nations and other community groups for six different types of projects: Project Types We Support: Acquire & Conserve: Land acquisition (fee-simple) with dual goals of securing public access and conserving ecosystems. Land can ultimately be transferred to a public agency, or remain private with a long term conservation agreement or plan. Protect Access Routes: Right-of-way easements and land acquisitions to secure long-term access to public land or water across private land. Build Trails that Give Back: Well-planned, sustainably built, new trails. Preference will be given to trail proposals that have multiple social and/or environmental objectives. Support Voluntary Private Land Access: Programs and agreements that allow the public to access private land in a way that benefits landowners, recreational access, and wildlife habitat. This category includes state administered programs, as well as conservation easements that allow public access. Restore Trails and Riding Areas: Maintenance, restoration, re-routing of trails, or trash clean-up efforts on either public land or publicly accessed private land. Preference will be given to projects where overuse or abuse are negatively impacting the recreation opportunities and/or the ecosystem. Grow the Community of Stewards: Programs that instill the ethos of stewardship through education and inspiration. Now, most onX users are hunters, fishermen, hikers and other types of people who are into the pursuit of nature itself, not the use of nature as a moto-playground. While onX came to fame as a hunting/fishing aid, the company also markets their app to off-roaders. Image: onX Some of those people are adamantly opposed to motorized vehicles in the backcountry. But onX itself seems keen to court the moto crowd, so again, if you’ve got an enduro bike club or some other non-profit group that could use some financial help to improve local trails, then perhaps you should check out further details on the grants here. Note that the first round of applications closes on May 17, 2024, but there’s a second round of applications that will close in August. Vezi sursa

  10. When Royal Enfield introduced its 650 Interceptor and Continental GT twin-cylinder models about six years ago, we thought we’d see follow-up models soon after. That wasn’t the case; it was a few years before we saw the Shotgun 650 and Super Meteor twin-cylinders hit the market, and given the rapid turnover in RE’s lineup in recent years, it seemed likely we’d see a new platform debut before we saw any other new models. It turns out that isn’t the case, and we can probably expect two new 650 twins from Royal Enfield in the months to come. This scrambler was put together in 2020 by Royal Enfield’s Latvian subsidiary. It gives an idea of what the new Bear 650 model *could* look like… we’ve been expecting a scrambler 650 for years now. Photo: Royal Enfield Latvia Dennis Chung at Motorcycle.com has uncovered trademark filings in the US and Europe for two new models: The Interceptor 650 Bear and the Classic 650 Twin. Here’s what he says about the machines: Of the two, we believe the Royal Enfield Interceptor Bear 650 is likely to come out soonest, as RE’s parent company, Eicher Motors, initially filed trademark applications for the name in April 2023, with a separate filing in the U.S. for “Royal Enfield INT Bear 650” (Honda holds claim to the use of the Interceptor name with motorcycles in North America). We didn’t hear much about the name for a while after that, as Royal Enfield was focused on the Shotgun and and Super Meteor models, but things began to pick up again earlier this month, when Eicher filed an application for a bear-shaped logo. What will the models be? Obviously the Classic will hold strong resemblance to the other Classic models in the lineup. As for the Bear, its association with the INT/Interceptor models could indicate a scrambler-esque machine, as those bikes are already commonly used for scrambler conversions. Or maybe not. Whatever the case, it’s interesting to see the new machines confirmed, as that means we can expect Royal Enfield to keep producing the 650 platform for the next few years. Vezi sursa

Ce echipare are? You shouldn’t have to fight for a spot. Never, ever insist yourself to someone who continuously overlooks your worth. And remember, it’s not the people that stand by your side when you’re at your best, but the ones who stand beside you when you’re at your worst that are your true friends.

  16. Want to ride the desert, but you’re stuck home, cleaning your condo? Welp, here’s one solution to get you through the lean times, when you can’t get out on the bike. Photographer Olivier de Vaulx has a new project on Kickstarter, titled Adventure Riding In The American West. Here’s de Vaulx’ description of the book: This coffee table book is first and foremost a collection of images, that collide or complete each other organically. These photos make you travel through the West, with almost no text but vibrant colors and infinite perspectives to let your imagination wander. The book features motorcycles, but is designed to appeal to any nature lover or enthusiast traveler. There is a mix of action pictures with landscapes photos free of bikes, as well as some portraits of wild animals… It’s a journey through the untamed West, with chapters featuring: – Deserts – Dunes – Mountains – Plains – Forests – Red Rocks – Paved roads The pictures have been shot within the Western states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Wyoming, and Washington. The book is 200 pages long, and unlike many of these photo collections, which are just a vanity project showing off rich guys’ trips on their expensive rented machines, this book has real-world riders on machines like Suzuki’s DR series, Husqvarna dual sports, the Honda XR650 and much more! Photo: Kickstarter The photos are a collection of de Vaulx’ work over the past decade, as he’s been shooting riders and the moto world for magazines and companies, and has a massive archive of his work collected but not seeing the light of day until now. Pages are 9×12 inches, so the photos are big and presumably gorgeous, in full color from FireWire Publishing. I haven’t held a copy of the book in my hands, but the spreads shown at the Kickstarter project certainly are very pretty. Photo: Kickstarter You should head to the program to check it out, or maybe buy a book (early adopters pay $40, then after that, pricing starts at $45). And you should read about de Vaulx’ philosophy behind the book: In this age of social media frenzy, I feel that the flow of images is becoming overwhelming. We scroll and jump from one image to the next without paying real attention. Videos are the next big thing if we believe the algorithms. But I reckon that photos hold more potential than we credit them for. Still images leave room for imagination and interpretation, and I’d like my readers to enjoy them in a big format. This kickstarter campaign will tell us if we’re right to believe that, in today’s world, a beautiful coffee table book is still allowed to bring vibrant images in your living room… Is he right? Is it time to once again value real things, not just social media dopamine hits? And if so, does that make you want to buy this book? Vezi sursa

  18. Everyone who has ever ridden off-road knows the “bang” that happens when your bike frame hits something solid. Especially in the Northeast, sometimes we just can’t avoid all those rocks. And so we bolt bash plates/skid plates to the bellies of our bikes. A Cushioned Skid Plate AltRider claims they’ve redesigned the humble skid plate, with a first-in-the-industry “Energy Absorption System,” specifically for the R1300GS. The AltRider Skid Plate still mounts directly to the engine case in front, and the centerstand at the rear, but between those two mount points, the plate basically has bump stops. Additionally, the rear of the skid plate is a “dual material design” laminated together. What Is It? The “Energy Absorption System” is a series of rubber bits (“custom elastomers,” that is, stretchy and squishy synthetic rubber) designed with varying density (harder on one side, and squishier on the other). This, says AltRider, acts like a dynamic suspension, and not only shields the bike from impact with 4mm of TIG-welded anodized aluminum, but dissipates shock. A good bash off a rock, then, gets absorbed by the whole plate, instead of just denting one part. Photo: AltRider Here’s how AltRider describes it: To effectively absorb the force of an impact, the Energy Absorption System components are molded using an engineered elastomer with CNC machined stainless steel plates. This ensures when the skid plate flexes from impact, none of that energy is transferred directly to the engine. The stainless-steel plates provide a robust mount while still decoupling the impact from the engine. Fitment The plate itself covers the bike’s exhaust headers and catalytic converter, as well as the lower engine case. It fits very tight and tidy against the bike, without looking like you’ve bolted on a giant lump of metal. Additionally, this skid plate is a permanent install, and does not need to be removed for oil changes. For those of you who would like to see the fun video-slash-advertisement that AltRider has put together for this thing, you’re in luck. Here it is on YouTube. [embedded content] It’s currently available for pre-order, with availability listed as the “second quarter of 2024,” which should be any moment now. Retail is around $450. More pictures and info is available at the AltRider website. Vezi sursa

  20. Many of us have never heard of Minsk. If we have, it’s probably from the Top Gear Vietnam special as Richard Hammond’s motorcycle of choice. Founded in 1951, the Soviet company got its start manufacturing captured German DKW designs. Located in modern-day Belarus, they exported motorcycles to many countries, though not so much these days due to sanctions regarding a certain disagreement in Ukraine. However, soon after the fall of the Soviet Union, one particular 1998 Minsk Wildcat 125 found its way to the United States, where it would remain unassembled in its shipping crate to this very day. This bike is now for sale on Bring a Trailer. Photo: Bring a Trailer Photo: Bring a Trailer The Wildcat 125 is a small off-road bike with a 123cc engine and a four-speed transmission. It’s a simple design with drum brakes and 18-inch wheels. The tire sidewalls even feature Cyrillic lettering, indicating that they are original equipment. You wouldn’t want to ride on tires this old, but they’re definitely worth hanging on the garage wall as a keepsake. You could also leave them on the bike if you only intend to display it. Photo: Bring a Trailer Photo: Bring a Trailer If you do intend to display it, be aware that even though it’s still in its original shipping crate, it’s still showing signs of its age. “Paint chips are present on the fuel tank, top triple clamp, and engine cases,” says the Bring a Trailer listing, and photos show that this is absolutely true. It also states that the fuel hose is cracked, which is not surprising considering its age. Photo: Bring a Trailer Photo: Bring a Trailer Even though this bike has never been on a trail, some of the components still have rust. The muffler, in particular, has rusty spots, and the chain is rather corroded as well. We don’t know the bike’s full history, but we do know it is currently in Scottsdale, Arizona, not too far from the Davis-Monthan Air Force Boneyard in Tucson, where they store unused aircraft because they don’t rust or degrade in the desert. What would you do with this Minsk Wildcat 125? Would you leave it in the crate as it sits today? Would you assemble it and show it off? Or would you finish the job that the dealer didn’t and make it a fully functional, rideable motorcycle? These are all valid choices. With a current bid of $500 and five days left in the auction, it could also be yours. It would certainly be a far more unique project than a Honda CB750. Vezi sursa

    Jett Lawrence Wins Again

He’s done it again! Australian racer Jett Lawrence has once again proved he’s a real-deal champion by taking the 450SX AMA Supercross championship as a rookie, nailing the win down for Team Honda HRC in the final race weekend. However, it wasn’t the same walk in the park that his 2023 outdoor season was. Jett Lawrence was the no-question winner of the 2023 AMA’s 450 Motocross series, winning every single race. His 22 wins were enough to make him the AMA’s Motorcyclist of the Year. The 450 series was a tighter competition; he came out strong at the start of the season, but Cooper Webb (Yamaha Star Racing) had caught up by the time the SX series hit the Foxborough round. But three podiums in the next three race weekends were enough to boost the numbers for Jett Lawrence, who finished the season with a safe seventh at the final race in Utah. His eight wins in the 2024 Supercross season put Jett Lawrence only behind Jeremy McGrath on the all-time rookie wins list. McGrath bagged 10 wins as a rookie in 1993, when he won the title. The only other rider to win the 450 Supercross title in their rookie year was Ryan Dungey, and both Dungey and McGrath are AMA Hall-of-Famers. Unless something goes seriously wrong, it looks like Jett Lawrence will be there as well, seeing as he’s cleaning up every series he races in. After the final race, Jett said the win hadn’t sunk in yet, but he remembered to thank his team. We had times when we sucked really bad this year then also times when we weren’t too bad, so, [I’m] super happy for the team and doing it for them. They’ve been awesome. They’re family now and to give them another title is just the biggest ‘thank you’ to them… I couldn’t do it without the team around me. [There’ve been] so many hard moments that we’ve had that you can’t even put it in an interview, it’s just so long. I’m just super happy just for my family and the team and yeah, I’m just going to leave it at that because it’s too much.” Meanwhile in the quarter-liter series, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s R.J. Hampshire won the 250SX West title, and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle won the 250SX East title. Vezi sursa
